Abstract
This study examined the impact of a sand-play therapy program that uses mindful play to facilitate the ego-identity re-formation in middle-aged women. This study involves 12 middle-aged women, with six participants assigned to an experimental group and the other six to a control group. The experimental group participated in a total of 8 sessions, meeting once a week for 90 minutes. To assess the effectiveness of the program, a questionnaire on mid-life crisis, ego-identity, mentalization, and mindfulness was given to both groups at the beginning and end of the therapy program. The study also analyzed the changes in the sandbox made by the participants in the experimental group. The data was analyzed using non-parametric statistical tests, including the Mann-Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, the sand-play therapy was effective in reducing the impact of mid-life crisis. Second, the therapy was helpful in improving ego-identity and mentalization. Lastly, the therapy brought about positive changes in the sandbox which observed by the participants in the experimental group. This study makes an important contribution to this area by supporting the use of structured sand-therapy in analytical psychology and the generalization of sand-play therapy.
